School support and participation in school attendance

The school integration assistance provided by EVIM Bildung gGmbH ensures that students with disabilities or mental impairments can attend school, regardless of the type of school they attend. Parents must apply to the relevant social services or youth welfare office to have the costs covered.

How integration assistance works

In our explanatory video, we show how EVIM's integration assistants support children in attending school. We explain how you can check your child's entitlement to integration assistance and how we can help you with this.

Areas of application

The integration assistants at EVIM Bildung gGmbH support students at a wide variety of schools in Wiesbaden and the surrounding area (e.g., Mainz, Rheingau-Taunus district). Support can be provided at elementary schools, including pre-school classes, secondary schools, including high schools, and all types of special schools.

Tasks of integration assistance

Integration assistants make it easier for students with mental, physical, or emotional disabilities to attend school and support them in their everyday school life. The support provided is always tailored to the specific needs of the individual student.

Implementation of the assignment

The number of hours of support varies depending on the needs and independence of the student. It is important for us to maintain skills that have already been acquired. Students should be encouraged to develop their self-confidence so that they can make use of the appropriate level of support.

The integration assistants accompany students with disabilities in consultation with teachers or special education teachers. The individual tasks of the integration assistant may include:

  • practical assistance with daily activities such as getting dressed and undressed
  • accompanying students around the school building or classroom
  • organizing the workplace
  • Assistance with work behavior and basic work techniques in class
  • helping with personal care
  • Accompanying and supporting students in school (leisure) activities
  • Assistance in using disability-specific aids
  • Support with communication.

Integration assistants are not substitute teachers and do not replace the support provided by class teachers or special education teachers. Integration assistance is not an educational support measure, but provides individual support tailored to the personal needs of the respective student.

Accompaniment on the way to school or on a school trip must be requested separately by the parents.

Close consultation with teachers, students, and parents to determine in which situations support is particularly needed and when the respective helper should remain in the background is crucial for successful work. In some cases, success also means making oneself redundant.

It is important for integration assistance not to impair social interaction with classmates and teachers through the constant presence of another adult. In some cases, this leads to the solution of one integration assistant accompanying two children in one class.

In schools with several support staff, regular team meetings are held with the responsible teacher and case coordinator to discuss how to tailor the support to the individual student.

Services

The school integration assistance services offered by EVIM Bildung gGmbH include the following:

  • Support for the child in everyday school life by permanently assigned individuals, if possible on a long-term basis
  • Support tailored to the individual needs of the students
  • Cooperation with parents
  • Cooperation with all those involved in the individual educational process, for example, class teachers, special education teachers, therapists
  • Personal and telephone counseling

In order to ensure the best possible school support for a child, we work closely with all parties involved. The exact description of the helper's tasks in each case is determined in advance by the school and the parents.

Before an integration assistant can start working with a child, they spend a day observing the class. Only when all parties involved – the child, parents, school, and future assistant – give their consent can the support be initiated.

If the assistant is already employed by EVIM Bildung, the support can begin immediately. In the case of a new assistant, the start should be as soon as possible after the further requirements for employment have been clarified.

Information for integration assistants

Getting started

Following a positive job interview and successful work shadowing, you will be hired as an integration assistant with a project-based contract at EVIM Bildung. Support during the onboarding process is provided on a case-by-case basis by the case coordinator and in relation to your field of work during the starter days.

Exchange and consultation

Mandatory meetings of all volunteers take place at regular intervals to clarify organizational issues and to exchange ideas and network with each other.

Another opportunity for team exchange is participation in ongoing collegial consultation. Here, questions are addressed and specific practical examples are discussed in small teams.

For ongoing qualification, we offer training courses from external institutions and internal learning days on current topics.

Information for applicants

No formal qualifications are required to apply for a position as an integration assistant. Experience in caregiving and nursing, as a childminder, and in raising your own children is advantageous. An extended police clearance certificate must be submitted before hiring and then at regular intervals.

To work in the school system, you must have B2 language proficiency, as clear communication and frequent consultation are essential for daily collaboration.

We expect empathy, reliability, patience, and the ability to engage with very different children and their needs. Enjoying working with people and being willing to accompany a student for several school years is essential.

You should also be prepared to accompany the child you are supervising on school trips.

You will be trained in your tasks in the area of school integration assistance during starter days. The starter days are mandatory events as part of your work at EVIM Bildung gGmbH. They take place over several afternoons and cover topics such as role clarification, types of disabilities, and autism.

In addition, we offer regular first aid courses as well as specialist and medical training courses, which are conducted by external providers.

For information on cost rates and calculating your co-payment, please refer to our cost table.

It is also important to have sufficient mobility to arrive at school on time.

If a student is ill, you can work at another school as a substitute for another student who is entitled to integration assistance.

By the way: In addition to integration assistants who work permanently at schools, there is also the option of working as a "substitute." They usually take on longer-term or spontaneous substitutions for sick employees. This can be a good opportunity for students in particular to get to know several schools.

The remuneration of EVIM Bildung gGmbH is based on the employment contract guidelines of the Diakonie in Hessen and Nassau (AVR HN). Integration assistants are classified in pay grade E4.

In some cases, we are commissioned to work with skilled workers. These are classified in pay grade E7.
